Pillows that are too high may cause stroke

Pillows that are too high may induce spontaneous vertebral artery dissection, which is one of the causes of stroke.

A study published in the European Journal of Stroke by scholars from Japan's National Center for Circulatory Disease Research and other institutions defined pillows with a height of more than 12 centimeters as pillow height, and pillows with a height of more than 15 centimeters as extremely high pillows.

The researchers analyzed the height and hardness of pillows used by some patients with spontaneous vertebral artery dissection, and also investigated whether the curvature of the cervical spine of the users changed.

The cause of spontaneous vertebral artery dissection is still unclear, and many patients experience symptoms such as pain in the neck and head and pillow when they wake up. Researchers said that some patients with spontaneous vertebral artery dissection may be caused by pillows that are too high. When the head is pillowed on a high pillow, the neck bends to a greater extent, especially when turning over, etc., which may easily cause vascular damage. For this reason, taller pillows should be avoided.
